EEC is aiming for Eurobasket in 2029

The Pre-Olympic Tournament at SEF was crowned not only by competitive success with the qualification of the National team, but also by absolute organizational success. Its executives FIBA congratulated the federation for the smooth operation in all areas and the changes made in such a short time on the field.

This event whetted the appetite of the EEC administration, which, having also taken over the Women’s Eurobasket in June 2025 (will be hosted again at SEF) wants to claim the Men’s Eurobasket 2029. In fact, the first allusions have already been made to FIBA, which sees this prospect with a very positive eye, since Greece is traditionally a guarantee for hosting major sporting events.

There is still nothing… official, such as a nomination and claim file, but the federation’s interest in bringing such a big basketball event to the country for the first time since the 1998 Mundobasketball is a given. In fact, it is under discussion whether Greece can claim only the conduct of a group and the final phase (the knockouts from the “16” to the final) or the entire eventi.e. of ALL the four groups.

However, the infrastructure exists, since both the OAKA, which is already being turned into a palace, and the SEF, which is expected to be improved, have the resources to host such a large event, as well as – if a decentralization solution is chosen – stadiums such as PAOK’s Palataki, the Two Aoraki of Heraklion or the closed AEK in Ano Liosia.
