Dead sailor pulled from the sea off Karpathos who took part in the race AEGEAN600.
According to information from the Carpathian Youth, last night (07/09), at approximately 21:00, in the sea area of Astakida, a sailboat with the flag of Spain faced a serious issue with the bad weather. The sails of the boat broke and two people were found in the sea. A female crew member was pulled out of them unconscious.
A helicopter assistance was requested, however due to weather it was unable to approach and the vessel from the Karpathos Port Authority took action. Coastguards from Karpathos escorted the boat safely to the port of Kasos. The relevant preliminary investigation is carried out by the port authority of Kasos.
The announcement of the port authority:
In the evening hours yesterday, the Port Authority of Kasos was informed about the fall into the sea of two crew members of a Spanish-flagged sailboat (I/F) vessel, which was sailing northwest of the island. The crew members were gathered by the I/F, but a 40-year-old woman (a French national) was pulled out unconscious. Lifeboat LS-EL.AKT. went to the area, where it located the I/F and escorted it to the port of Kasos. From a doctor of P.P.I. The death of the 40-year-old foreigner was confirmed in Kasos, whose body is to be transferred to the Forensic Service of Rhodes for a necropsy. A preliminary investigation is carried out by the Kasos Port Authority.
The announcement of the organizers
“Extremely strong melt currents in the Carpathian Sea hampered the Aegean 600 fleet, which circumnavigates the Aegean in a non-stop 600 nautical mile route, resulting in 14 boats abandoning the race.
Unfortunately, the adverse weather conditions resulted in the death of a 40-year-old French citizen from the HEAVEN boat, northwest of Kasos.
The 40-year-old was found in the sea with a serious blow to the head and efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
The whole sailing family and especially the organizers express their deep regret for the incident.
Meanwhile, at 03.18.52 in the early hours of Tuesday, Eric Maris’ French-flagged trimaran ZOULOU crossed the finish line in Sounio setting a new race speed record with a time of 1 day 13 hours 18 minutes and 52 seconds.
For the 605 nautical mile distance of the race route, this means an average hourly speed of 16.2 knots.
Jason Carroll’s American-flagged trimaran ARGO finished just 1 minute 21 seconds behind ZOULOU. The two boats were in the lead alternately throughout the race.”
