FIFA plans to exclude Russian national teams from international football until recently, due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine, a source familiar with the process told Reuters.
FIFA is in advanced talks with UEFA on the matter and a decision can be made later today. UEFA is expected to meet at 19:00 (Greek time), in order to decide on various issues related to Russian football.
Russia is scheduled to host Poland in the play-offs for the World Cup on March 24, but the Polish federation has announced that it will refuse to play against the Russian team.
The suspension will apply to all Russian national teams, including the women’s team, which is set to play in UEFA EURO 2022 in England in July.
Apart from Poland, several European football federations have announced that they will not play international matches with Russia until recently. Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland and Albania have followed in the footsteps of England, the Czech Republic and Sweden, refusing to face Russia at any level of international football.
