Research of the world-renowned company Nielsen proves that its popularity basketball it is experiencing a huge boom worldwide, while the results concerning Greece are also impressive.
The survey was conducted in 18 countries worldwide, almost five years after the first one which took place in the year of the World Cup in China (2019). The countries in which the research was done are the following: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China. France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy. Japan. Mexico, Philippines, Spain. Turkey. UAE, USA and Great Britain.
Average 3 out of 4 people who took part in the survey confirm that they have a significant interest in basketball. This automatically brings sports in the second place of the most popular sports worldwide. But it should be noted that the interest increased from 68% in 2019 to 74% in 2024. The increase is spectacular as with a statistical, scientific reduction it is proven that 3.3 billion people on the planet are interested in basketball between the ages of 16-69. In fact, immediately after the World Cup in China, the increase is even greater among the 16-29 age group, as there interest reached 80%.
The level of interest in ages 16-29 is extremely optimistic about basketball, as in the 18 markets surveyed, a total of 4 out of 5 people surveyed on average said they have a strong interest in basketball. Compared to 2019, in the same age groups, there is a 10% increase. In countries such as China, Indonesia, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, but also Spain, Great Britain and Germany, the percentage is even higher.
The World Cup, which was held in 2023 for the first time in three countries (Philippines, Indonesia and Japan) presented 33% increase in interest. 58% stated that they had relevant knowledge about the event, while 28% showed interest in its development. For the 2022 Women’s World Cup, 42% are aware and 20% have shown interest. These numbers confirm that the last two World Cups (Men’s – Women’s) were the best in the history of basketball in terms of interest.
In everything that has to do with her Hellasaccording to Nielsen findings the interest of those asked amounts to a deafening 87% while in the 16-29 age group the penetration of basketball is achieved at a rate of 84%.
