The Socca Champions League, the largest international inter-club mini football event after methodical moves under absolute secrecy of the Organizing Committee is coming for the first time to Greece and more specifically to Rethymno, Crete for 1+2 years. The very hospitable Crete and especially Rethymno which knows very well what Socca / mini football means, having organized the Socca World Cup in 2019 with great success, managed to win the nominations of Budapest and Mallorca.
The support of the Municipality of Rethymno, the Region of Crete and the Regional Unit of Rethymno played a catalytic role in this success. The city is already getting into football gear with fans and local businesses looking forward to it. In previous years, the biggest international 6×6 club football event was held in Slovenia and Croatia. The games will be covered live by more than 30 TV crews around the world with more than 1500 athletes participating.
80 teams from 30 European countries with top level athletes will participate. These are the top teams of the Championships around the world as well as some teams that won their right to participate through wild cards with competitive and development criteria. The teams that will represent Greece participate in the official domestic mini soccer leagues of the Greek Socca, namely the OPAP Unileague and the Socca League Greece.
The event will take place at the Sochora stadium, in the heart of Rethymno city in a fantastic location that is an advertisement for Greece. The facility will of course change shape temporarily to be able to meet international standards. The event will be framed by the Socca Aegean Cup, an international tournament that will take place for the first time on October 21-22 immediately after the end of the Socca Champions League, where the Greek Mini Football Team will play its last friendlies before the World Cup in front of the always welcoming Cretan audience!
