THE Jonathan Whitley is stepping down as Red Bull’s sporting director at the end of 2024 to take up duties at its Formula 1 team Audi. Whitley has been with the Austrian team for nearly two decades and has played a major role in winning a total of 13 championships.

It has been a long and successful relationship with Jonathan, over 18 years” said Red Bull boss Christian Horner, and continued: “His contribution to six constructors’ world titles and seven world drivers’ championships, first as team manager and later as sporting director will forever be a mark in our team’s history». Red Bull stress that Whitley will remain in place until the end of the 2024 season, before entering a sabbatical in 2025.

The Austrian team added: “All of us at Oracle Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technology wish him all the best in his new role and would like to extend our thanks to Jonathan. Red Bull Racing has tremendous strength and depth and this provides an opportunity for others within the team to emerge. We will announce the new team structure in the coming weeks».

News of Wheatley’s move comes about a week after it was announced that Audi chief executive Andreas Seidl and Audi executive Oliver Hoffmann were leaving the Formula One project, with former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, to take over as head of the project. Whitley will report to Binotto, with the Italian taking up his new duties today (1/8).
