Gagatsis on the new championship: “They unite us more than they divide us”

by

Countdown to the start of this year’s Stoiximan Super League.

Tonight (17/8, 20:00), all eyes will be on Panthessalikos and Toumba, where the premier matches of the 2024-25 season will be played, with Volos-Olympiakos and PAOK-Panserraikos.

The new president of the EPO, Makis Gagatsis, with his statement on the official website of the Greek federation, placed himself in relation to the start of the new championship

His statement in detail:

“On the occasion of the start of the Super League 1 Championship, I would like to first of all express my warmest wishes to all participants for a competitively productive year and, above all, good health.

Being at the start of the event, what we need to decide is where we want to go. All together. Because the common course and, consequently, the common destination, is a basic condition for the success of the Championship and the development of football in Greece. In this common destination, some group will cut the thread first. That, after all, is what the game is all about: some win and some lose, and it’s time to show some basic maturity and accept the nature of the sport.

As an E.P.O. and under the suffocating pressure of time, we were ready to contribute effectively to the upgrade of the Championship and to the strengthening of its credibility. We worked closely with UEFA and methodically managed to have three prominent and already successful members of European refereeing in the KED. The responsibility for their success in Greece, too, I think belongs to a large extent to the clubs themselves. Because it is time to reflect on something simple: it is not possible on a permanent basis for those who assume the fate of the Greek arbitration to misalign. We must find where the shore is crooked.

It doesn’t take much effort to move forward, but self-criticism, honesty, an environment of calm and a climate of trust. Under these conditions we will realize and we will all realize that more unites us than divides us.

Happy New Year and good luck to everyone.”
