Brazil has an Olympic champion on the way and plays as an underdog in the Davis Cup

by

Starting this Friday (4th), Rio de Janeiro will host its first Davis Cup games in 20 years. At the Barra Olympic Park, Brazil will face Germany’s strong team, led by Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, in an attempt to advance to the decisive phase of the traditional men’s tennis tournament.

It is in the condition of underdog that the athletes captained by coach Jaime Oncins will enter the court – who played in Davis’s last time in Rio, in 2002, a victory over Canada. They are betting on the clay floor, to which they are more accustomed, to place themselves among the 16 finalists who will compete for the title in November, in a venue to be defined.

The match that will open the match will take place at 16:00: Thiago Wild, from Paraná, 216th in the ATP (Professional Tennis Association) singles ranking, will play against Zverev, third in the world. Following, Thiago Monteiro (114th) will measure forces with Jan-Lennard Struff (60th). The duels will be broadcast on SporTV 3.

The match will continue on Saturday, starting at 2 pm. In the doubles, Bruno Soares (19th in the doubles ranking) and Felipe Meligeni (42nd) will face Kevin Krawietz (14th) and Tim Pütz (12th). The next match will be between Monteiro and Zverev. If necessary, the tie will be broken in a duel between Wild and Struff.

“We already know that every game will be very tough against Germany, they are the favorites. But we know very well what the Davis Cup is like, and favoritism is only valid until the game starts. We will play at home and try to transform the court into a cauldron. We need to use this to even things out and seek victory”, said Soares.
