Fournier: “Ideally I’d like to retire at Olympiakos – I was at the 2010 final with their fans, it was crazy”

by

His followers Olympiakos reserved a royal welcome for Evan Fournierwho is the new star of Giorgos Bartzokas’ team.

The French forward/guard gave an interview to Team before making his way to Greece and, among other things, mentioned the interest from NBAhis desire to conquer the Euroleague, the possibility to retire as a player of Piraeus but also the final of his Final Four 2010which he had watched for life!

What he said in detail:

“I had contact with some contenders for the title in the NBA. One in particular, them Milwaukee Bucks. An interest that did not bear fruit. And then one two year offer from a team I wasn’t interested in, where they asked me to coach the new players. I don’t want this anymore.

When the Olympics started, I put everything aside. It could upset me. I had already thought about going back to Europe. If it is to experience something possible in one place, it was 100% yes. I would like to experience more things like this in the NBA, I only made the playoffs four times. But you don’t control everything there. After the games, I told my agent that I was willing to transfer. THE Olympiacos was my priority.

Paris was my second choice because playing at home would be possible. But they weren’t interested, that quickly became clear.

The number one thing is that I want to win the Euroleague. I like that it is a non-superstar oriented club with a lot of off the ball play, team values, fighting, winning. I wanted Final Four basketball, but not to the extremes, like Barcelona with him Sarunas Yasikevicius. I have the ability to adapt to many things.

I’m looking forward to my debut. I don’t want to go through what I went through for two years in the NBA. I was bored to death. I want real competition, a place where I can be myself. I turn the page with no regrets. I am at peace with this decision and excited about the new page it is turning.

My relationship with Olympiakos goes back a long way. I had been to Euroleague final in 2010in Paris, I was in the stands with his fans. In the end Barcelona won, they had Rubio, Navarro, Olympiakos Teodosic, Beverly, Childress and Papalukasmy favorite European player. The fans were crazy, a Greek version of New York style. They did something that stayed with me.

I will not return to America. I don’t have an NBA clause in my contract with Olympiacos. I want to settle down, ideally finish my career there and not move every year. The NBA was twelve years, ten of which were great seasons, I had a great time. I would dream of bringing home a title or becoming an All-Star but there are things you can’t control. And I always gave it my all.”
