The Men’s Table Tennis Super League started in Sweden and Konstantinos Angelakis and Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos played their first matches in the new season, renewing their collaboration with Sparwagen and Record respectively. Both went to the Scandinavian country straight from the Balkan Championships in Sarajevo.
Angelakis, who was named the first Balkan champion in men’s singles, competed with Sparwagen last Tuesday. He had one win and one loss in his team’s 4-3 set loss.
Konstantinopoulos, who, together with Angelakis, won second place in the Balkans in men’s doubles and were also members of the “silver” National team, made his season debut on Thursday. He was decisive in Record’s marginal victory with two wins in singles and one in doubles.
Sparwagen hosted Munkendal on Tuesday night, just two days after Angelakis’ impressive finale at the Balkan Championships by winning a gold and a silver medal in the individual events.
The great defender was placed in position 1 of his team and played two individual matches. Both, in fact, were against Spanish internationals. First, he edged Marc Duran in 3-2 sets, then he edged Miguel-Angel Vilces in 3-1 sets. The team match was decided in the doubles, where Angelakis was not used and finally Sparwagen was defeated 4-3.
Record faced Falkenberg away from home and prevailed with 4-3 sets. Konstantinopoulos was used in position 2 of the team and also participated in the doubles. His own results proved decisive in the final victory. The left-handed international defeated Dane Alan Bentsen (2005 European team champion) 3-0 sets and compatriot Thor Christensen by the same score.
In the deciding doubles with the score at 3-3 he teamed up with Sweden’s Hambus Sonderlund and with the best of three set system (as stipulated by the country’s federation in the final) they won 2-1 sets.
