by

AFP At least 22 fans were injured in a game between Querétaro and Atlas for the Mexican Championship, on Saturday (05), in a scene of violence and beatings at the La Corregedoria stadium, in the city of Querétaro.

According to local police, the clash between the fans started in the stands. In the 15th minute of the second half, Atlas was winning by 1 to 0. A group invaded the pitch and staged scenes of savagery.

The players went to the locker room. Families with children tried to find a safe place to protect themselves, as more fans fought each other. A VAR (video referee) module was destroyed and the match was suspended. According to Liga MX (Mexican first division) a new date will be announced for the conclusion of the game.

Mikel Arriola, executive president of Liga MX, released a statement on social media, condemning the attitude of fans and said that those responsible for the lack of security in the stadium will be punished in an exemplary way.

The Atlas club demanded, in a statement, an investigation by the authorities and the League, determining the responsibilities of those involved and applying the full force of the law.

The governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, said on Twitter that the institutions must answer for the facts. “I gave instructions to apply the law with all its consequences.”
