A true sports story from the 90s which is still discussed in the ranks of fans, is expected to be revived soon on the big screen.
Two Russian film producers, Denis Rodimin and Dmitry Rudovsky, decided to make a documentary called: “Poisoned Match”, documenting what happened in the much-discussed Game 3 of the 1994/95 EuroLeague quarter-finals between Olympic and her CSKA Moscow.
According to the Russian complaints at the time, two days before, in Game 2 of the series, many CSKA players reported strange symptoms, while, at noon on the day of Game 3, several they felt very sick and were taken to the hospital with poisoning.
The CSKA side argued that in bottles donated from the hosts in the expedition, although they were sealed, there were small holes in the lids, and that through these some had poured the psychotropic drug haloperidine in the waters. In fact, they left clear clues for… Olympiakos’ hand behind the alleged sabotage…
In the end, Game 3 turned into a match… fiasco, since, only 5 players of the Russians were able to compete (Kudelin, Vadeev, Grezin, Spiridonov and Kisurin), with CSKA claiming that FIBA did not accept the request to postpone the match and in case of abstention would impose a heavy punishment on the Russians.
The story in question is therefore expected to be made into a documentary and shown on the big screen, in an expensive production, as, according to IMDB its cost reaches 8.5 million dollars.
“Story based on true events where the CSKA basketball team fought to qualify for the Final Four of a European competition against Olympiakos where they were poisoned in one of the most important games”is the IMDB description of the film.
