The transfer of Maradona’s body to a mausoleum was approved

by

An Argentine court has approved the transfer of the body of Diego Maradona, who died in 2020, to a future mausoleum sought by his children in a central Buenos Aires district to facilitate future tributes to “Argentina’s greatest idol.”

The decision by the court in San Isidro, located north of Buenos Aires, comes on the eve of the trial of a nurse, a member of Maradona’s medical team, over the causes of his death.

The main trial with accused seven doctors (including a neurosurgeon, a clinician, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a head nurse and nurses) has been scheduled, after several postponements, for March 2025.

The nurse, Gisela Madrid, who stated from the beginning that she only followed the instructions of the doctors, won the right to be tried separately from the rest of the defendants.

Regarding Maradona’s body, the San Isidro court initially decided in May not to approve the transfer, citing “possible measures that could be required,” notably exhumation, as part of the trial, after some parties objected.

The court noted in its recent decision that there is no longer “opposition from any of the parties involved” and ruled that a “favorable response” should be given to the request of Dieguito’s children.
