One of the top three individual table tennis tournaments this year, the “China Smash”, concluded on Sunday in Beijing and among the participants was Panagiotis Gionis thanks to his good position in the world ranking. The great Greek athlete was disqualified in the first qualifying round of the big event, but he knew that his results would change. In the end, he got 10 points and is at number 85 of the 41st week.
From the Greek side, Gionis’ effort in the Chinese capital was the only one in the last period of time in an evaluated event. In the qualifiers, the top defender had lost in a strong match against the French Thibaut Porret. He got 10 points, but he had no benefit in the ranking, since the changes for other athletes who participated in the “China Smash” also counted.
In the new table he went to number 85 with a total of 287 points when he was at number 83 the previous week.
In general, it is noteworthy that after the tournament in Beijing, the entire top five men have Chinese. Ma Long, a finalist in the “China Smash” final (No. 4), returned to it, while the winner, the young Lin Xindong, rose to third place.
Also, two-time “silver” Olympic medalist in Paris, Truls Meregord, of Olympiakos, re-entered the top ten after placing 5-8.
