Having played at Sheffield United from 2017 to 2024, o George Baldock associated his name with the ‘blades, with news of his death spreading grief through the club’s ranks.

The team coach spoke about the sad incident, Chris Wilderwho spoke about how the club dealt with the death of the experienced full-back, recalled the conversation with him when the call-up from the Greek national team had arisen and reckoned that Baldock would love to play in United’s upcoming match against Leeds.

What he said in detail:

I was in disbelief when I found out, there were no words, just shock. My wife spoke to his wife, she knew her, when you are in a team families are involved, they go to the matches, you see people on a daily basis.

Then I spoke to players and ex-players quickly, it was a very close-knit group. She is one tragic circumstancewhich we all have to manage. You don’t realize how close footballers are, they spend a lot of time together.

Last Thursday was a difficult day, especially for the children, who knew George. We spent it together.

George fought for everything. He wasn’t in Manchester City’s academies, he had to fight for what he achieved, from his humble beginnings at MK Dons to playing for the Greek National Team.

When he was called, he asked me what to do and I told him that he should do it. And he did. He didn’t play 50 times for Greece, but the reaction of his team and the Federation told a story. It is clear what they thought of him.

Emotions in the dressing room must be balanced. It will be mentioned, of course and you know something? George would love to play in this match, away to Leeds».
