He announced his retirement from active activity Matt Derbyshire!
Through a post on social media, the English striker who during his career also wore the jersey of Olympiakos, made it known that he is hanging up his football boots, stating that he will never forget his presence in the “red and whites”.
He started his professional career from Blackburnfrom which he joined Olympiakos in January 2009, going on to play for Birmingham, Nottingham Forest, Oldham, Blackpool, Rotherham and Australia, before moving to Cyprus, where he played for Omonia and her AEK Larnaca. In the 2022-23 season he played in India, while his last team was the English Bradford.
In detail what he mentioned in his post:
“What a privilege in life to play this great game of football. I have never taken a single day for granted, waking up and being able to do this as my job for the past 22 years.
He gave me the privilege of playing for my hometown Blackburn Rovers, the team I supported growing up as a local boy and made my Premier League debut with. I could not and would not have chosen a better club to start my journey with and I will be forever grateful to them.
I have been so lucky to have experienced and played at all levels of English football and I am so proud to have represented my country.
Playing abroad gave me the experiences of the Champions League and the Europa League. I will never forget the experience of playing for Olympiakos in Greece, winning the double and playing in front of their fans.
I found a home in Cyprus playing for Omonia Nicosia, which will forever have a piece of my heart and will always be a home for myself and my friendship. Captaining this club has been an absolute joy and privilege.
Football has given me such life experiences from Great Harwood fc to playing on the other side of the world in Australia. I loved every second of it.
I wish I could do it all over again, but now it’s time to pass on my knowledge and help the next generation of young footballers.”.
