The Formula 1 Drivers’ Association breaks with the FIA: “Watch your tone, we’re adults!”

by

In direct rupture with the FIA and President Mohammed Ben Sulayem decided to have its pilots come Formula 1. Following the penalties imposed for using indecent language, the Drivers’ Union reacted strongly. “We call on the FIA president to be mindful of the tone and words he uses when speaking to or about our members, whether in public or not. Our members are adults and do not need instructions through the media for such simple things“, the pilots report.

It is recalled that recently Max Verstappen was punished for some “french” with hours of social work, while in Charles Leclerc was fined 10,000 euros for a similar offence, which caused the displeasure of Formula 1’s protagonists.

The announcement in detail:

As in all sports, participants must be disciplined with decisions, whether they like it or not. We pilots are no different and we fully understand that. Our members are professional drivers, they are the gladiators who in every race offer a great spectacle to the public. As for insults, there is a distinction between those intended to offend others and in other simpler circumstances, such as to describe bad weather or an object or situation. We call on the FIA president to be mindful of the tone and words he uses when speaking to or about our members, whether in public or not. Our members are adults and do not need instructions through the media for such simple things.

The Drivers’ Union has on many occasions expressed its views that fines do not suit our sport. For the last three years, we have asked the president to give us details about the strategy and how the FIA allocates the money and how the money is spent. We have also expressed our concern about the negative image fines bring to our sport. We again ask the president of the FIA to provide financial transparency and open dialogue with us. All parties must jointly decide how the money will be allocated. The Drivers’ Association wants to work together constructively to promote our sport for the benefit of all».
