Giannis Antetokounmpo: “I think I’m the most consistent player in the NBA, I don’t get the recognition I should”

by

Giannis Antetokounmpo for everyone and everything! The Greek Freak, who claims the early hours with the Bucks NBA Cup against the Oklahoma City Thunder (18/12, 03:30), spoke to Athletic and among other things he talked about what made him not lose faith in the team, even though he started the season with 2-8 wins, he explained why he has stopped nailing so much, putting more of the mid-range shot into his game this year, while standing and the recognition he would like to receive.

What he said in detail:

I believe in myself. I really believe in myself. Truth. I believe in the work I do. I believe in the mindset I have. I believe in everything around me.

Good or bad. Win or lose. Good game or bad game. I don’t care. I really believe in myself and my abilities. I know this is not a season where we will be down. No, no, no. I knew we would turn it around, because I know myself. I really know myself.

When things go wrong, people fall. I have a slightly different approach.

I don’t nail anymore. Old nails 10-12 times per match. Maybe I can’t pin anymore. I don’t know. I’m trying to be smarter with my body and how I play this year.

I need to be a threat and I want to develop my game. I want to expand my game. I want to add another dimension to my game and it has helped me (including the mid-range shot) so I will continue to use it. This year, I’m trying to focus a lot on mid-range shots, floaters, hooks, different angles, footwork, elbow plays. They have helped me so far.

What is different? I have to do it. I have no other choice. Gotta get those shots. I have to perform them with confidence. They make my game easier because they allow me to be a threat off the racket. When the opponents fill the paint, I have to shoot.

Should I give credit? It’s too early to give credit. Let’s play. Let’s win. Let’s win games. Let’s be successful. It’s a team combination. Everyone has to do their job. Everyone must be receptive to listen, to be a student. And everyone needs to be honest and tell you things as they are.

Sometimes I get frustrated because I’m competitive and I’m improving. And I don’t think I get the recognition I should. And this is sometimes frustrating. I think, “am I doing my job?” And then I say, “yeah, you’re doing your job. You’re getting better. You are doing the right job”. I really think I’m the most consistent player in the NBA. From my 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th season. Every year.

But okay, sometimes you don’t get the recognition when you want it. But maybe one day, I hope, you will get it».
