And it happened… Sir Gareth Southgate: The former England coach was knighted by King Charles!

An honorary distinction for his services in football was received by Gareth Southgatewho was knighted by King Charles and will now bear the title of Sir. The 54-year-old technician is the only coach besides him Sir Alf Ramsay (s.b. who celebrated winning the trophy at the 1966 World Cup), who led the England national football team to the final of a major competition.

The “three lions” were defeated in consecutive European Championship finals under Southgateinitially in 2021 by Italy on penalties in Wembley and then last summer from Spain to Berlin. “I am deeply grateful for all the kind messages and comments I have received since my knighthood was announced” Southgate said on his LinkedIn page, adding: “It has been the greatest honor to represent my country, both as a player and coach, for almost 20 years and to be a part of the game I love for almost 40. I am incredibly grateful to the amazing people and teams who have supported me, both on and off the pitch. A special thanks to my family for their continued love and encouragement, although I must admit they have made it clear that the titles I hold at home will remain unchanged.”

The 54-year-old technician guided her England national team in four major tournaments, with the Three Lions reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia Qatar World Cup in 2022. The veteran defender of Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough celebrated 61 victories in the 102 games he was in charge of the England national team, while he still had 24 draws and 17 defeats.
