Olympiacos is hosted at “Zalgirio Arena” by Zalgiris (02/01, 20:00, NovaSports Prime, sport-fm.gr, News Bulletin 247) for its 19th matchday Euroleague.
Shortly before the departure for Kaunas, the George Bartzokas talked about what his team will be asked to watch out for against the Lithuanians, referred to the addition of Lonnie Walker and how it affects Zalgiris, while expressing his excitement and gratitude for his coaching records with Olympiakos and in general his presence in his dream team.
In detail what he said:
For the game against Zalgiris: “First of all, I want to thank you all for being here on such a wonderful day and promoting basketball, and happy birthday to everyone, happy new year. We approach the game with due seriousness, even though the days are against this current, everyone wants to have fun with their families and people. We have to get into a “mood” of responsibility and face a very good team that defends very well, they put their hands very well on the ball and you have to protect it otherwise they take it away from you”.
On the addition of Walker in relation to the first round matchup: “If you look at Trinchieri’s statements, I think it looks like Walker has given Zalgiris a more unpredictable way of attacking, but it’s less ‘systematic’ when the American plays.”
For his coaching records: “It’s better to talk about the team now, it’s still something that moves me deep inside. I never imagined that life would bring me to this point, it’s something I appreciate very much. All I have to say is a thank you to the presidents who have trusted me in two terms and for such a long time, and gave me the opportunity to be able to work for so long in the team I dreamed of.”
On what he would like to see come true by 2025: “To get titles and give joy to the fans of the team. Preferably three different titles.”
On whether limiting Walker and Sirvidis will be key: “I wouldn’t say it’s just that. Francisco also executes very well, Birutis and Dunston play the pick and roll very well. Everyone is playing well, that’s why they’ve had such big wins like the one in Madrid. If I could say one thing, it’s that they put their hands on the ball so well that if you don’t have quick decisions and good spacing you’re going to have problems.”
