The Uruguayan footballer, who had previously played in Greece with AEL and Ghoulwas found dead in a hotel room in Abato, Ecuador, with the first evidence pointing to suicide.

Local media reported that the 32-year-old striker died a day after arriving in the country from Uruguay to join his team’s training camp, Mussuk Runa.

The reports also bring to the fore Akunia’s legal dispute with his ex-partner, who had accused him of domestic violence.

The Uruguayan had come to our country for the first time in 2021 and scored nine goals and two assists in 37 appearances, while at the beginning of the 2023/24 season he played in Lamia, having three goals and one assist in 16 matches.
