Corinthians meets Boca Juniors back in Libertadores

by

Out of the last three editions of the Copa Libertadores, Corinthians will find an old acquaintance in the return to competition. In the draw held by Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) this Friday (25), in Luque, Paraguay, the alvinegra team fell into the Boca Juniors bracket, its victim in the 2012 decision.

The teams – which also played in the tournament in 1991 and 2013, with an Argentine triumph – are in Group E, led by Boca. They will also face Deportivo Cali, from Colombia, and Always Ready, from Bolivia. The table is still to be made, but the group stage will start in early April.

Palmeiras, the current two-time champion, will not face any team with tradition in Libertadores. Head of Group A, the alviverde team will play against Emelec, from Ecuador, Deportivo Táchira, from Venezuela, and Independiente Petrolero, from Bolivia.

The draw put regional rivals face to face. Head of Group D, Atlético-MG will have América-MG as one of their opponents. Independiente del Valle, from Ecuador, and Deportes Tolima, from Colombia, complete the group.

Flamengo, the main team in Group H, will face Universidad Católica, from Chile, Sporting Cristal, from Peru, and Talleres, from Argentina. In Group B, headed by Athletico, are Libertad, from Paraguay, Caracas, from Venezuela, and The Strongest, from Bolivia.

A debutant in the competition, Fortaleza fell in Group F, alongside River Plate, from Argentina, Colo-Colo, from Chile, and Alianza Lima, from Peru. Another player in the tournament for the first time, Red Bull Bragantino is in a group of Libertadores champions, Group C, which includes Nacional, from Uruguay, Vélez Sarsfield, from Argentina, and Estudiantes, also from Argentina.

The ceremony at Conmebol’s headquarters also included the draw for the Copa Sudamericana keys. In Group D, São Paulo, the 2012 champions, will face Jorge Wilstermann, from Bolivia, Ayacucho, from Peru, and Everton, from Chile. Santos, in Group C, will face Unión La Calera, from Chile, Banfield, from Argentina, and Universidad Católica, from Ecuador.

Only the first place in each group advances to the round of 16, where they join the third place in the Libertadores groups. In Libertadores, the first two of each bracket go to the knockout stages.
