Letter from AEK and Panathinaikos players to the EPO: “To revise the decision on behind closed”

The letter

Honorable gentlemen,

On behalf of the football players – members of the PSAPP in Panathinaikos and AEK, we send you a letter to the decision to hold the final of the women’s closed doors.

“We, the footballers of the two finalists of this year’s Greek Women’s Cup final, wish to express our deep frustration and dissatisfaction with the decision to take a decision in camera. At a time when European Women’s Football is experiencing continuous growth, recognition and support, this decision is contrary to the concept of equality and deprives the sport, teams and fans the opportunity to participate in a sporting celebration.

The Men’s Cup final took place this year in the presence of 55,000 spectators, sending a strong message about the dynamic and festive dimension of football. On the contrary, the Women’s Cup final is completely lacking in this dynamic, and is even at a distance of almost 300 kilometers from the seats of both clubs, without the slightest possibility of the presence of fans, families and people who support the sport daily.

The time is also inappropriate, as it was set at noon on the same day that the UEFA Women’s Champions League final is being held, which further undermines the importance and promotion of the event. We wonder what the purpose of this choice is when not guaranteed promotion, support, nor the basic right to fight in front of our audience. We ask for respect, equal treatment and the opportunity to play in conditions that fit the importance of a final. Many of us have dedicated our lives, we have literally tired and literally bleed to reach this level. The least we ask for is to see our sport progress in Greece as well, as in other European countries.

We also call to revise the decision to carry out the final camera and to take into account the principles of equality, the promotion of the sport and respect for athletes and fans.
