Ski Cross Olympian Audun Groenvold lost his life after being struck by lightning during a holiday hut, the Norwegian Ski Federation said Wednesday. He was 49 years old.
Groenvold had won the bronze medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010.
“We have deeply saddened the news of Audun Groenvold’s premature death,” the federation said. “The former National Athlete of Alpine and then the Freestyle category was recently hit by lightning during a hut excursion.”
According to the announcement, he was immediately taken to the hospital and received treatment for his injuries, but he succumbed on Tuesday night.
Groenvold was initially a member of Norway’s National Alpine Ski Team before turning to Freestyle and Ski Cross. He had risen once on the podium in a World Cup match of Alpine skiing when he won the third place in Sierra Nevada, Spain in 1999.
In 2005 he also won the bronze medal at the Ski Cross World Championships, and in 2007 he became the winner of the total cup of the category.
At the end of his career, he worked as a coach of the National Team and Telemaster.
“Norwegian ski lost a great figure, which had a significant contribution to both the Alpine and Freestyle community,” said Federation President Tove Moe Dyrhaug, adding that his death leaves “a huge gap”.
