The Brazilian team returned to the top of the FIFA rankings after five years away from the top. This Thursday (31), the entity published the updated table, which shows Brazil ahead of Belgium, leader for the last three years.
The last time the Brazilians had led was in August 2017, under the command of coach Tite.
The Belgians, who are now in second place in the ranking, were responsible for eliminating the selection in the last World Cup, in 2018, in the quarter-final stage.
Brazil managed to regain the lead thanks to the 4-0 wins over Chile and Bolivia in the Qualifiers, while Belgium couldn’t get out of a 2-2 draw against Ireland, on the last day 26. Both are classified for the Qatar World Cup .
France, the current world champion, completes the podium of the FIFA ranking in third place, followed by Argentina (4th), England (5th), Spain (7th) and Portugal (8th). Italy, in sixth place, was eliminated in the European playoffs by North Macedonia and will not be in the World Cup.
​The FIFA ranking serves to establish the distribution of the draw pots for the World Cup, which takes place this Friday (1st), in Qatar.
The host country team enters as the seed precisely for hosting the competition.
There are still three spots to be defined in the repechage. In one of the intercontinental playoffs, the United Arab Emirates will face Australia. In the other, Costa Rica will seek a place in Qatar against New Zealand.
In Europe, Wales faces the winner of Scotland v Ukraine, a duel that was postponed due to the war between Ukrainians and Russians.
