London 2026 will mark a unique centuries -old, as a World Ping Pong Championship returns to the place where it all began. In 1926, the International World Championship was held in the English capital, and the International Federation of Table Tennis (ITTF) was founded in the same year, and then few could imagine today’s huge evolution of the sport.
The forthcoming Men’s-Women’s World Championships concerns the team (entitled World Table Table Tennis Championships Finals) and will be held in London 28-4/10-5 of 2026. To underline this Historical Milestone, ITTF has designed a complete system, ” Ensure that every race matters to the end. ”
Ittf has revealed its plan on Monday on its website and the key news is that the top event will be expanded and will gather 64 national teams in both men and women.
Before we look at all the information in the report, we should note that in this development they are theoretically growing and the chances of the Greek presence returned to the institution … In previous years the entries were in 40 teams. The world rankings plays a big role and, as Greece has a significant fall from the inability to follow the path of very frequent international matches to find points, has been out of the world in recent years and the finals of the World Team Championship …
It should be noted that in the World Team Ranking of this month Greece is number 70 in men and 87 in women…
ITTF states in the report: “The 64 countries are a significant increase, compared to the 40 teams used in the recent championships. This increase reflects the worldwide development of the table tennis and gives more teams the opportunity to compete in the biggest scene of the sport.
The tournament will take place in two famous London sites. ‘Copper Box Arena’ will host the first rounds from April 28 to May 1st onwards the action will be transferred to ‘Wembley Arena’ from May 2 to 10, where the best teams in the world will compete for the final prize.
The 64 groups of each sex are divided into 16 groups of the four groups. They all face each other with the system one by one and so each team will have three matches.
The basic innovation lies in the event. Stage 1a includes the top eight teams (the first seven countries in the world rankings and the English organizer) in two groups. These matches only determine the ranking order for the main draw, with the eight teams automatically qualified.
Stage 1B includes the other 56 teams in 14 groups, where only the strongest go. The 14 winners of the groups qualify, as well as the six best second teams based on the results of their matches.
The other eight second teams will be in a single qualifying round and the winners of the four couples who form will complete the main dash of 32 teams.
The tournament culminates with the women’s final on May 9th and the men’s final the following day, offering a perfect finale at the Hundred Years’ World Championships. ”
At the end of the text, ITTF notes: “From the first service to the ‘Copper Box’ to the final at ‘Wembley’, London 2026 will not only highlight the current power of the world table tennis, but will also honor the remarkable course that began in this city 100 years ago.”
