Palmeiras host São Paulo and may expand the crisis on rival

by

Palmeiras and São Paulo live quite different realities since they faced each other in the final of this year’s Campeonato Paulista.

At the time, the victory gave the tricolor team its first title in nearly a decade and created the expectation that the squad, then led by Hernán Crespo, could dream big of the season. But between the final at the State Championship and the last derby between the clubs this season, everything changed.

The two teams face each other again this Wednesday (17th), at 20:30h, at Allianz Parque, for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship — Premiere broadcasts the match.

Since the beginning of the Brazilian Nationals, São Paulo has never managed to move to the top half of the table and is now fighting relegation.

On the other hand, Palmeiras, with the exception of the debut round in which they lost, was always among the top ten of the tournament, became the leader and still has chances for the title.

In this year’s Copa Libertadores, the teams faced each other in the quarter-finals and São Paulo came out ahead in the first leg, at home, but it was only a draw at Morumbi and succumbed 3-0 at Allianz Parque.

Palmeiras, current champion of America, is again in the final of the tournament, this time against Flamengo, and if they win the title, equal the three trophies conquered by the tricolor rival.

In the Copa do Brasil, the team alviverde was surprisingly eliminated by CRB, from Alagoas, on penalties.

The tricolors were eliminated by Fortaleza with the same script as Libertadores: also in the quarterfinals and again tying the first leg at home after coming out ahead (2-2), in addition to having conceded three goals in the back duel (lost by 3 to 1).

Now with Rogério Ceni, São Paulo is in 15th position with 38 points, just two more than Bahia and Juventude, respectively the first team outside and the first inside the relegation zone of the Brazilian (16th and 17th place).

If they lose and these two teams win (the first faces Sport away from home, on Thursday, and the second, Fluminense at home, on Wednesday), the round will end in the sticking zone.

To make matters worse, São Paulo is coming off a 4-0 defeat at Morumbi against Flamengo, a former Ceni team.

On the other hand, Palmeiras lost, in the last round, the game against Fluminense and the vice-leadership of the Brazilian.

In third place with 58 points, they already see the leader Atlético-MG distant, despite having a game in hand.
