The compensation requested by Real Madrid from UEFA is colossal: Almost 4.5 billion euros for the European Super League!

In one of the most resounding legal moves in the history of European football, the Real Madrid and A22, the company behind the European Super League initiative, are preparing lawsuit against UEFAclaiming compensation amounting to 4.5 billion euros. The lawsuit concerns “substantial damagesĀ» suffered by the agencies involved, including the financial hit from event cancellation, loss of future revenue and damage to their image and reputation.

This decision comes after a series of failed negotiations between UEFA and Super League representatives, which involved A22 CEO Bert Reichart, UEFA General Secretary Theodoros Theodoridis, as well as Real Madrid and Barcelona representatives Anas Lagrari and Fernando Ledesma. Although there has been progress on issues such as the television model and the management of the event, the talks they collapsed due to disagreements over the final format.

Real Madrid, which has been one of the main supporters of the Super League since the very beginning, now believes that UEFA never intended to reach an agreement, but merely sought to delay the implementation of the competition. This attitude, according to Real and A22, constitutes an abuse of a dominant position and a violation of free competition, as the Court of Justice of the European Union had already ruled in December 2021.

Today’s disclosure of the amount of compensation comes one day after the announcement that the Regional Court of Madrid rejected UEFA’s appeals, paving the way for a claim for damages. Real Madrid, through an official statement, emphasized that “this decision enables us to demand compensation for the significant losses suffered by the clubĀ».

This case is expected to have a profound impact on the European football landscape, as a claim of such a large sum by a top club against UEFA could lead to review of institutional frameworks and relations between clubs and organizers. At the same time, Barcelona stopwhich seems to have moved away from the Super League and closer to the ECA, adds even more complexity to the development of the case.

The continuation is awaited with particular interest, as UEFA is now called upon to face one of the biggest legal challenges in its history, with possible consequences not only financial but also institutional for the future of European football.
