Despite the fact that his term on the bench of the Greek national team is over, Mr Gustavo Poget is still following the course of the “blue and white” with interest.
Speaking on ERT’s ‘Game Changers’ show, the Uruguayan coach spoke candidly about the defining moments of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and revealed what he considers the turning point that determined the team’s fortunes.
Acknowledging the effort of the internationals, the former federal coach analyzed what happened in the crucial games with the Scotland and the Denmark.
At the same time, he did not fail to mention the bitter defeat by Agriculture which deprived her of presence Greece at Euro 2024.
What he said in detail:
As for whether he watches the national team: “I watch the team. I was always happy with the draw, because I always had a hard time. Every time we went to the draw, we were drawn against teams like France, Holland and England. I think the team is improving, the coach is doing a good job, giving opportunities to young players, but there is also momentum in the game.”
For the crucial match against Scotland: “I want to be completely honest. I think Greece missed out on World Cup qualification in the first half against Scotland. She was excellent at that time and she had to score, she defended well. Not scoring in those 45 minutes made the rest of the game difficult as the opposition had their moments so it was difficult. I was excited, like most people, thinking now is the time. After the game against Denmark, however, I was sad for the players, but also for the Greeks in general.”
On whether anything would change in the March 26, 2024 match against Georgia, where Greece lost on penalties to miss out on qualifying for Euro 2024: “I trusted the players, we were playing against the best team we had to face and we prepared very well. The game was exactly what I expected, the way we played, we knew the danger. I think the opposing team wanted to “steal” the game”.
