Highlight at the start of the 2022 F1 season, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc, from Ferrari, dominated the Australian GP at dawn this Sunday (10) and won for the second time in three races held in the year.
Leclerc started from pole position, was barely threatened and took the victory with ease. He was ahead of Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), in second, and British George Russell (Mercedes), who completed the podium in third.
It was the Monegasque’s fourth career win, which extended his lead at the top of the championship to 71 points — 34 points ahead of Russell in second place. In 2022 Leclerc also won the season opener in Bahrain and finished second in the previous round in Saudi Arabia.
Red Bull’s Dutchman Max Verstappen, who won the F1 title last year, pulled out of the race because of an engine problem. He was in the runner-up position when he warned his team that he was feeling a strange smell and left the race.
It was the second time this season that the defending champion had problems with his car. In Bahrain, Verstappen also did not finish the race because of a fuel supply defect.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton started in fifth position and came to third, but was overtaken by Pérez and Russell. The Brit, seven-time world champion, still inherited Verstappen’s position and finished fourth.
In the constructors’ world championship, Ferrari reached 104 points, while Mercedes is second with 65.
It was the return of the Australian GP to F1 after a two-year absence due to the coronavirus pandemic. The fourth stage of the season will be the Emilia-Romagna GP, in Imola, on April 24th.
