The Colombian Football Federation announced this Monday (18) the dismissal of coach Reinaldo Rueda, 65. The break with the coach comes three weeks after the country ended its participation in the Qualifiers without getting a spot for the 2022 World Cup, in Qatar.
The Colombians ended the contest in sixth place, with 23 points, one less than Peru, the fifth place, qualified for a play-off against the United Arab Emirates or Australia.
Rueda had replaced Carlos Queiroz in January of last year, after a spell in Chile, but Colombia won only 7 of the 22 games under his command.
Even with players like James RodrÃguez, Luis DÃaz and Juan Cuadrado, Colombia struggled to hit the net and scored just four goals in their last nine qualifiers.
“The Executive Committee (of the Colombian Football Federation) will analyze and evaluate its options to determine who should take on the role of coach,” the federation said in a statement.
Reinaldo Rueda, who already commanded Flamengo during the 2017 season, when he was runner-up in the Copa Sudamericana, was in his third spell as Colombia’s coach.
