Chile accuses Ecuadorian player of ideological falsehood and seeks place in the World Cup

by

The Chilean Football Federation (FFCh) filed a complaint with FIFA against player Byron Castillo, who defended the Ecuadorian national team in South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. false birth, false declaration of age and false nationality”.

If FIFA accepts Chile’s complaint, Ecuador could lose points from the games that Byron played – the team finished fourth and won a direct spot in the Qatar World Cup. The punishment would benefit the Chilean team, which placed seventh.

In a statement, the FFCh informed that on May 4 it sent the FIFA Disciplinary Commission a complaint against the player and the Ecuadorian Football Federation, pointing out that “there is numerous evidence that Castillo was born in Colombia, in the city of Tumaco, on the July 25, 1995, not November 10, 1998, in the Ecuadorian city of General Villamil Playas”.

In South America, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Ecuador qualified for the World Cup. Peru finished in fifth place and, without a comeback, will play a repechage against the United Arab Emirates or Australia.

Chile’s hope is that the points from the matches Castillo played in will be given to Ecuador’s opponents. In that case, the Ecuadorian team would fall in the table, and the Chileans would share the fourth place with the Peruvians, with 24 points. Castillo did not play against Peru, fifth in the current table, nor against Colombia (23 points), sixth.

“The world of football cannot close its eyes to so many tests. It cannot accept the practice of serious and conscious irregularities in the registration of players, especially when we talk about a world competition. There must be fair play on and off the field”, adds the statement from the FFCh.

According to Chilean football officials, “the investigations carried out in Ecuador revealed a legal report from the National Directorate of Civil Registration, the country’s highest authority in this matter, which found inconsistencies in the birth certificate presented by the player.”
