A consortium led by Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, backed by Clearlake Capital, has won the bid to acquire Chelsea in a £4 billion deal, the British newspaper Telegraph reported. this Friday (6th).
The proposal has already been sent to the British government and the Premier League for approval. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Russian owner Roman Abramovich, now subject to British government sanctions, put the London club up for sale in early March following his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Abramovich paved the way for the acquisition on Thursday after dismissing reports that he wanted a loan granted to the club, reportedly worth £1.5bn, to be refunded.
The Boehly group, which also includes Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and British property investor Jonathan Goldstein, was in exclusive talks to buy the club after a belated offer from British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe was rejected.
Groups led by Stephen Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics, and Martin Broughton, former chairman of British Airways, were previously eliminated from the bidding process, while a consortium led by Chicago Cubs owners, the Ricketts family, withdrew from the dispute.
