Verstappen wins Miami GP, cuts Leclerc’s lead

by

Max Verstappen, who faced problems in qualifying and started in third place at the Miami GP, dominated the race this Sunday (8) and won for the third time in five races this season.

The Dutchman from Red Bull overtook Carlos Sainz, second on the starting grid, right at the start of the race, and overtook Charles Leclerc, leader of the championship, on the ninth lap.

Verstappen managed, with the result, to reach 85 points and reduce the advantage of Leclerc, who arrived in second place in Miami and has 104 points.

On lap 41, Lando Norris, who was in 14th, was touched by Pierre Gasly and crashed. The accident led to the activation of the safety car. Before the race, drivers complained about the quality of the new track, which would not be grippy enough outside the main race line.

When the safety car returned to the pits, Leclerc increased his performance and put pressure on Verstappen for a few laps, but not enough to overtake him.

This was Miami’s debut on the F1 circuit. Liberty media, the American company that took control of F1 in 2017, has been striving to win over the American public, promoting events to bring drivers closer to local fans. There was even a presentation show bringing together drivers and team representatives on the lawn of Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
