Russian climber Pavel Kostrikin lost his life in “Camp I” on Mount Everest. It is the first reported death of a foreigner at the highest peak in the world in the current climbing season that began in March, a Nepalese official said on Sunday.

Kostrikin, 55, died at the camp, which is located at an altitude of about 5,360 meters. Camp II on the southeastern ridge route to Mount Everest is approximately 6,400 meters high.

Officials say Kostrikin’s body will be transported to Kathmandu when current cloudy weather improves.

People have climbed Mount Everest 10,657 times since the first time in 1953, while 311 people have lost their lives so far, according to the Himalayan database.

As it is known last month, on the mountain Daoulagiri, which belongs to the Himalayas, the leading Greek climber Antonis Sykaris passed away.

Mountaineering is the main tourist activity in Nepal and a major source of income as well as employment. The country has eight of the 14 highest mountains in the world.
