Corinthians seeks to expand Brazilian hegemony in the Women’s Libertadores

by

This Sunday (21) Corinthians will have the chance to expand Brazilian dominance in the Copa Libertadores Feminina. In search of the third continental championship, the team faces Independiente Santa Fe (COL) in the decision of the 13th edition of the tournament, won nine times by teams from Brazil.

The city of Montevideo, Uruguay — where the final of the men’s version of the competition will also be played, between Palmeiras and Flamengo, on Saturday (27) — will host the match, scheduled for 20:00 (GMT), at the stadium Great Central Park.

On television, Fox Sports and Conmebol TV will broadcast the match. On the internet, Facebook and the Disney Group’s streaming services broadcast.

Champion in 2017 and 2019, Corinthians is one of the main responsible for placing Brazil at the forefront of the ranking of achievements in the main women’s championship on the continent. Only São José-SP won the championship more times, with three trophies (2011, 2013 and 2014).

In addition to the Parque São Jorge club, Santos (2009 and 2010) and Ferroviária (2015 and 2020) also won the competition twice.

Only in three editions the cup has not been with a Brazilian team. The most recent was in 2018, when Atlético Huila, from Colombia, was champion by beating Santos. Colo-Colo, from Chile, won in 2012, by beating Foz Cataratas, from Paraná. In the only final without a team in Brazil, Sportivo limpeño (PAR) beat Estudiantes de Guárico (VEN) in 2016.

The country with the most titles in the men’s version of the Libertadores, with 25 trophies, Argentina is next to the nations that don’t even have a runner-up in the women’s competition, along with Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

With a perfect campaign so far (with 100% success in five games), Corinthians enters as the favorite in the dispute against Santa Fe.

In addition to being the current Brazilian champion, a competition in which they defeated rival Palmeiras in the decision, the Corinthians team will still have another title dispute before the end of the season, as they advanced to the Paulista final – their opponent will be São Paulo. The São Paulo Football Federation has not yet confirmed the dates of the two decisive games.

Santa Fe, in turn, reached the final after facing two penalty shootouts, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, phases in which they eliminated, respectively, the Brazilian teams Avaí-Kindermann and Ferroviária.

The team alvinegro thrashed Nacional (URU) 8-0 in the semifinals, but the game was marked by a case of racism. Striker Adriana was called “monkey” by an opponent. The alvinegra team then responded with goals and gestures of protest.

In a statement, the Parque São Jorge club informed that “the female delegation [do Corinthians] will have all the necessary legal support for the necessary investigation and the blunt punishment of this unacceptable act.”

The group stage, in addition to the quarterfinals and semifinals, were all played in Paraguay. Only the decision was taken to Uruguay. In the dispute for third place, in Asunción, Ferroviária beat Nacional on penalties, by 3-1, after a 1-1 draw in normal time, on Thursday (18).
