Globo resumes broadcasting rights for Libertadores from 2023

by

Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) announced this Thursday (12) the winners of the bids for the broadcasts of its club competitions between 2023 and 2026. TV Globo, which had lost the Copa Libertadores to competitor SBT, resumed the right to air the competition.

The Rio station will be solely responsible for showing the games on open TV in Brazil starting next year. For closed TV, the packages were split between ESPN (Disney) and Paramount (Viacom). Another package, the best moments, went to One Football.

Defeated in the bid for the main championship on the continent, SBT won the right to broadcast the Copa Sudamericana on open TV. On closed TV and in the best moments, the division was equal to that of Libertadores, between ESPN, Paramount and One Football.

This means that there will be no more matches on Conmebol TV, created on the pay-per-view system to fill the gap of matches that would not be broadcast.

At Libertadores, the agreement represents the return of Globo after the unsuccessful negotiation of 2020. At the time, trying to readjust agreements amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the broadcaster did not reach an agreement with Conmebol and terminated the contract. SBT performed and held the rights until this year – the current tournament will continue on its schedule.

Outside the competition, Globo saw SBT show the last two finals, played between Brazilian clubs. Last year, an agreement was reached with Conmebol to end the legal dispute that has been raging since the termination. And now it’s back.

The values of the winning proposals were not disclosed.
