Corinthians wins the trio of Women’s Libertadores in dominant year

by

Current Brazilian champion, Corinthians won the Libertadores Feminina title this Sunday (21) by beating Independiente Santa Fé (COL), 2-0, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Corinthians will still have the chance to win an unprecedented triple crown in the decision of the São Paulo Championship in the coming weeks.

The trophy in front of the Colombians also made the Parque São Jorge club the biggest winner of the continental tournament, alongside São José-SP, each with three cups.

The teams from São Paulo are responsible for making Brazil the greatest power in the women’s version of the main competition on the continent, with 10 titles in 13 editions.

Also champions in 2017 and 2019, Corinthians had a perfect campaign in the current edition. The team achieved 100% success in six games. In all, 24 goals scored and only two conceded.

In recent years, Alvinegras got used to stacking titles, but for the first time they took Libertadores and Nacional (2018, 2020 and 2021) in the same year.

Before the ball rolled to the decision, the Corinthians knelt to protest racism. In the semifinal, against Nacional (URU), forward Adriana was called “monkey” by an opponent of the Uruguayan team, thrashed 8-0.

The center forward was precisely the first to shine in the decision of the competition. After enduring an initial pressure from the Colombians, who hit a ball on the crossbar, the team opened the scoring after 9 minutes, in a counterattack that ended with Adriana’s header.

Having come out ahead on the scoreboard was important for the Brazilian team to take control of the duel and, before the break, they managed to expand their advantage. On minute 41, it was Gabi Portilho’s turn to deflect it into the goal after a cross by Tamires, from the left.

With the end of the initial stage, as the teams headed for the locker rooms, fans of Gaviões da Fiel arrived at the Gran Parque Central stadium. The main Corinthians organized an excursion to Uruguay, but arrived late on the stage of the decision, in time, however, to see the rest of the game and the celebration for the title.

Only the final of the Libertadores was played in Montevideo, which on Saturday (27) will host the decision of the men’s version, between Palmeiras and Flamengo. The group stage, in addition to the quarterfinals and semifinals, were all played in Paraguay.

The good presence of Corinthians fans in the stands, however, made the Corinthians feel at home. So much so that in the second half the team started to calmly manage the advantage, avoiding taking risks until the final whistle.

After beating Palmeiras in the final of the Brazilian Championship and, now with the Libertadores cup in their luggage, the Corinthians will prepare for the final of the São Paulo Championship, in which the opponent will be São Paulo — the São Paulo Federation has not yet released the dates of the two decisive matches.
