Visit to our “neighborhood”: Giant asteroid will pass relatively close to Earth on May 27

by

A giant asteroid, Asteroid 7335 (1989 JA), about 1.8 km in diameter, will pass in relatively close – but safe – distance from the Earth on May 27th. It is one of the largest asteroids ever detected approaching our planet, more than twice the size of the tallest building in the world, the skyscraper Burj Khalifa in Dubai, while in the main photo the spacereference.org compares it in size with Mount Everest.

It was discovered in 1989 and is one of 2,265 space rocks that the US Space Agency (NASA) considers “potentially dangerous asteroids”. The asteroid will make its closest transit from Earth at the end of May since it was discovered, while it will not be so close again at least until … 2914.

The asteroid will pass at a distance of at least tenfold (4 million kilometers) from that of the Moon from Earth. Its passage will be a good opportunity for observation by astronomers, professionals and amateurs. It will be best located in the southern sky near the constellation of Hydra.
