At a construction site in Mexico, archaeologists have unearthed the ruins of an ancient Mayan city filled with palaces, pyramids and plazas.

This location will eventually become an industrial complex near Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

But at the moment, this is a unique insight into ancient culture.

According to archaeologists, this place, called Xiol, has some Mayan-style architectural features common to the south of the Yucatan Peninsula, but rare near Merida.

“I think more than 4,000 people lived here,” said Carlos Peraza, one of the archaeologists who led the excavation of the city, which was probably occupied 600 to 900 years ago. ..

“There were people from different disciplines…there were priests, scribes and common people who lived in these great palaces,” Peraza said.

Researchers have also found graves for adults and children buried in obsidian and flint tools, donations, and other items.

Remains of marine animals have also been found in the area, suggesting that urban dwellers are supplementing their agriculture-based diet by fishing off nearby beaches.

Xiol was discovered after the construction of the industrial complex began. The landowner says that the archaeological site is preserved, but it is still being built.

“Over time, the city (in the district) has expanded and many archeological sites have been destroyed…but as an archaeologist, I hope to find such a well-preserved place. We’re also surprised because we weren’t there,” Perez said.
