Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s No. 2, leaves the company

by

Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer (COO) at Meta, which owns Facebook and a longtime right-hand man to Mark Zuckerberg, said on Wednesday that he was leaving the company after 14 years.

The executive stated that the departure should occur in the second half of the year and that she plans to continue serving on the company’s board of directors. In addition to Facebook, Meta also owns Instagram, WhatsApp and other apps.

“When I took on this job in 2008, I expected to stay in this role for five years. Fourteen years later, it’s time to write the next chapter of my life,” Sandberg wrote in a Facebook post.

She added that she was “not entirely sure what the future will bring” but that she would focus on philanthropy. Sandberg also said that she will be getting married in the coming months during the northern hemisphere summer.

Sandberg was Zuckerberg’s top adviser at Facebook, which she joined after building the advertising business at Google.

The executive was often cited as the “adult in the room” in Facebook’s early days, tasked with turning a fast-growing startup into a profitable company.
