Today, June 5, is World Environment Day.
An annual event since 1974 to raise awareness and foster awareness of issues that threaten nature and the climate.
This is an initiative created by the United Nations (UN) to provide a global platform to provide environmental information.
And more than 150 countries participate.
Every year, World Environment Day is held in several countries where official celebrations are held.
The host country for 2022 is Sweden.
What is the theme of World Environment Day 2020?
By the way, this year’s theme is #OnlyOneEarth. This is the revival of the first global environmental rally from 1972 in Sweden.
2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Conference on the Environment, the first international conference on the environment in 1972.
“The Only Earth” was the motto of the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which put sustainable development on the world agenda and led to the establishment of World Environment Day.
In 1972, the Stockholm Conference launched many new global agreements to facilitate the establishment of environmental ministries around the world and to collectively protect the environment.
The idea of World Environment Day was actually developed at the Stockholm Conference, which was first held in 1973. It was here that the goals of poverty reduction and environmental protection were combined, paving the way for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Fifty years after the first meeting, Sweden hosted Stockholm +50 on June 2-3 in anticipation of today’s World Environment Day.
The United Nations has officially warned that the world is on the “fast path to climate catastrophe” and has a clear goal of keeping global warming below 1.5°C this century.
For this reason, annual greenhouse gas emissions must be cut in half by 2030. Without action, the impact of air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50% over a decade, and the plastic waste that flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.
This year’s theme, “Only One Earth,” is an appropriate theme that focuses on the urgency of climate emergencies.
Due to the pandemic, last year’s World Environment Day was celebrated online, mainly in digital events. This year, we will present expert panels, exhibitions, film screenings and concerts throughout Sweden, available at worldenvironmentday.global.
