“We have chosen Crete, we have chosen Heraklion, we have chosen to unleash the potential of our homeland” stressed the Minister of State and Digital Government

The new Data Center “Knossos II” will be one of the largest in Greece, stressed on Friday the Minister of State and Digital Government Kyriakos Pierrakakis visiting the facilities of the Data Center “Knossos” operated by the National Network of Technology and Research Infrastructures (EDYTE SA – GRNET) at the University of Crete.

Mr. Pierrakakis stated: “We have the special pleasure to be on the premises of the University of Crete in Heraklion. This is where one of the largest Data Centers in the country will start operating very soon. This is “Knossos II”. Already, in these places is the Data Center “Knossos I”. “Knossos II” will be five times bigger and will run on green energy. It is funded by the Fund for Recovery and Sustainability. The Region of Crete has recently signed, together with us and the University of Crete, a memorandum of cooperation on how this great project is implemented. I think this has a very strong both symbolic and real value in the field, because in the final analysis such infrastructure can really help to unleash the significant potential of the country. We chose Crete, we chose Heraklion, we choose to liberate the potential of our homeland “.

The Minister, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Digital Government Thodoris Livanos and the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis, was guided to the facilities of “Knossos” by the Rector of the University of Crete Georgios Kontakis, the Vice Rector S. Elias.

The new Data Center will be called “Knossos II”. It is manufactured following the signing of a Tripartite Program Agreement between the University of Crete, the Region of Crete and the National Network of Technology and Research Infrastructures (EDYTE SA – GRNET), a supervised body of the Ministry of Digital Government. This is the new ecological data center which is expected to develop into one of the largest in Greece. Already, the first Data Center of EDYTE operates on the premises of the University of Crete, and with the installation and operation of the new Data Center, the University of Crete is expected to be a reference point and focus for all of Greece.
