SpaceX has fired at least five employees over editing and distributing an important letter from its founder, Elon Musk.
In an open letter to SpaceX executives seen by Reuters, Musk called Musk for the company he founded “attention and shame.”
In response, the billionaire-owned space company has laid off employees associated with the letter, according to the New York Times.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the company was investigating and “suspended some employees who were involved in the letter” by emailing them.
Shotwell’s email was because other employees “felt uncomfortable, intimidated and/or angry that the letter forced them to sign something that did not reflect their views.” He said that he was fired.
“We have a lot of important work to do and we don’t need that excess activity,” Shotbell said.
Mask, who is also SpaceX’s chief engineer, is considered to be beyond the company’s success, but his employees are reluctant to associate him with public stunts.
SpaceX’s open letter, first reported by The Verge, has been edited by staff in recent weeks and shared as an attachment to an internal “motivated” group chat with thousands of employees.
“All tweets sent by Elon are de facto official statements of the company,” the letter said.
The open letter included a list of executive requests, including the “quick and clear separation of SpaceX from Elon’s personal brand.”
He also urged executives to hold leaders accountable and “identify and respond to all forms of unacceptable behavior.”
Musk recently bought Twitter for months, criticizing remote work and sexual harassment allegations and monopolizing the headline, but denied it. Shotvel once again clearly defended the millionaire over the fraud allegations in an email sent to SpaceX staff.
