The Australian government described the moment as “historic”, noting that “the proximity to Ecuador, which is 12 degrees south, gives astrodynamic and natural advantage for space horizons”.
The rocket took off and flew about 350 kilometers (218 miles) into the night sky, where it remained visible for only ten seconds before disappearing. It carries technology similar to the “mini Hubble” telescope and will focus on X-rays coming from Alpha Centauri systems.
It is the first rocket to be launched by Australia since 1995 and the launch marks the beginning of a “new era” for the country’s space industry by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
