The Mayflower robotic “offspring” was built at the Gdansk shipyards in Poland and transported to the Plymouth Industrial Park for the second part of the work and preparation for the voyage.
An unmanned robotic ship representing the Mayflower voyage in 1620 landed near Plymouth Rock. The sleek stand-alone Mayflower met an escort boat as it approached the Massachusetts coastline on Thursday, more than 400 years after the ship of the same name sailed from England.
It was towed to the port of Plymouth, in accordance with US Coast Guard rules for unmanned vessels, and anchored near a replica of the original Mayflower that brought the pilgrims to America.
Piloted with artificial intelligence technology, the trimaran did not have a captain, navigator or anyone on board.
The first attempt by the solar ship to cross the Atlantic in 2021 did not go so well, as many technical problems occurred, forcing it to return to its home port, Plymouth, England, the same place from which the Pilgrim settlers sailed in 1620. It started again off the south west coast of England in April, but mechanical difficulties led it to the Azores in Portugal and then to Canada.
«“When you have no one on board, of course you can not make the necessary corrections.” said Rob High, an IBM software executive who helps with the project. “It’s also part of the learning process».
ProMare, a non-profit marine research organization, has partnered with IBM to build the ship and use it to collect data on whales, microplastic pollution and other scientific research. Small autonomous test vessels have crossed the Atlantic in the past, but researchers describe it as the first ship of this size to do so.
The completion of the trip «means that we can begin to analyze the data from the voyage of the ship “and investigate the performance of the artificial intelligence systemSaid High. He also stressed that the construction of such unmanned vessels, which will sail at sea, will help them gather useful information about the marine world.
In 1620 the ship Mayflower departed from the port of Plymouth in England, which would transport immigrants to the New World (102 passengers and about 30 crew members). The trip had a strong religious character for it and the passengers were named “Pilgrims”. The original destination was Virginia, but due to problems that arose at the end of the voyage, it was decided to disembark the ship’s passengers off the coast of Massachusetts.
