If you buy an Apple or Samsung phone after 2015, you could be one of 30 million UK consumers subject to multi-million dollar lawsuits.
What is the consumer champion? The £480m claim has been launched in response to allegations that chipmakers have overcharged for their products.
Qualcomm makes popular microchips that allow smartphones to connect to 4G and 5G. What is the dominant force in the market? He claims to have abused that position and accused the technology of “increasing prices”.
These prices were passed on to customers of Apple and Samsung products that use chips. Say
If the legal claim is successful, a qualifying smartphone owner may be awarded compensation of £5 to £30.
Consumer companies have been arguing with Qualcomm through the Court of Competitive Appeals since early last year. However, it is not yet known when the case will end.

Consumer groups have said they refuse to license patents to other manufacturers and refuse to supply chips to smartphone makers unless they agree to expensive licenses.

Both proceedings are intended to “recover the overpayment” from consumers against these devices as a result of Qualcomm’s actions.
Annabelle Hoult, Executive Director, said:
‘which? This charge against Qualcomm was brought on behalf of millions of British consumers who are suffering as it is not feasible for individuals to seek damages from the company on an individual basis.
“That’s why it’s so important for consumers to come together and demand the compensation they’re entitled to.”

It is asking Qualcomm for comment.
