On Saturday night, two new Galileo satellites were successfully launched from the European space base in Kourou, French Guiana, increasing the total number of satellites in the system to 28, making it possible to provide stronger and more accurate signals and services in various fields.
The satellites are now under the management of the EU Space Agency (EUSPA) and the team responsible for the operation of the satellite after its separation from the launch vehicle, during the Launch and Initial Position in Orbit (LEOP) .
The Galileo 11 launch is the first in a series of 6 launches (with two satellites per launch), which will enable Galileo to offer more accurate satellite navigation data, new and better communication services and create new opportunities in Europe’s space sector.
In the coming days, the EUSPA team will steer the satellites – for the first time – from the Galileo Special Control Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, to their exact orbit at 23,222 km above the Earth. After extensive orbital testing, the included satellites will start transmitting normal signals.
About the European Union Space Agency (EUSPA)
EUSPA provides secure European satellite navigation services, promotes the commercial exploitation of data and services from the Galileo, EGNOS and Copernicus programs, and coordinates the forthcoming EU Government GOVSATCOM satellite communications program.
EUSPA is responsible for the security accreditation of all components of the EU space program. By fostering the development of an innovative and competitive space sector and working with the EU space community as a whole, EUSPA contributes to the European Green Pact and digital transition security and protection of the Union and its citizens, while strengthening its autonomy and adaptability.
