This week, two Russian astronauts successfully completed a spacewalk on the International Space Station (ISS).
NASA said Roscosmos commander Oleg Artemyev and flight engineer Denis Matveyev completed the spacewalk in 7 hours and 47 minutes.
On Friday, Artemiev and Matveev left the ISS for open space to operate their new robot.
They have achieved their main goal. This included moving the European robotic arm’s external control panel from one operating area to another and testing the arm’s bracing mechanism to ensure it could withstand the load.
In addition, the duo extended the Strela telescopic boom from the Zarya module to the Poisk module.

This is the eighth spacewalk or spacewalk on the ISS this year. The spacewalk was originally scheduled for three weeks earlier, but was cut short because the battery in Artemyev’s spacesuit died.
“Additional spacewalks are planned to continue equipping the European robotic arm and activating the Nauka airlock for future spacewalks,” NASA said in a statement.
European robotic work will be used to move spacewalkers and cargo around the Russian segment of the station.
It was Artemyev’s eighth spacewalk and Matveyev’s fourth.
The spacewalk was broadcast live on NASA’s YouTube channel and included audio commentary explaining what was happening.

NASA also released stunning images from the spacewalk that show Earth in stunning perspective.
In April, the same Russian cosmonaut successfully activated a new robotic arm during a spacewalk.
The arm is called the European Robotic Arm (ERA) and is attached to the Russian Nauka (meaning “science”) Multipurpose Experimental Module (MLM).
