Reveals about Elon Musk’s Optimus humanoid robot – Watch video

Production of the Optimus, which is expected to weigh around 73 kilograms, will likely begin sometime in 2023

The head of Tesla, Elon Muskfinally presented the long-awaited humanoid robot Optimus at last night’s event during Artificial Intelligence Day of the company at its facilities in Palo Alto, California. The prototype robot, made by Tesla, walked on stage and greeted the crowd, in a move that symbolizes the ambitions of the autonomous electric vehicle maker – which is now facing increasingly fierce competition – to expand into innovative areas beyond vehicles.

Billionaire Musk, also the creator of the aerospace company SpaceX, has stated that the market for robots will in the future be more valuable than that of cars, with or without a driver. As he said at the event, according to Reuters, “our goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to perfect Optimus and prove it.”

Musk pointed out that humanoid robots currently “lack a brain” and don’t have the intelligence to navigate the world on their own, while also being very expensive and produced in small numbers. Instead, he argued, Optimus “will be a highly skilled robot,” produced by Tesla in large quantities, eventually in the millions. It is expected to cost less than a car, under $20,000 (or about €20,000), compared to around $100,000 which is currently the price of a humanoid robot.

Production of Optimus (named after the powerful robot of the same name from the “Transformers” movies), which is expected to weigh about 73 kilograms, will probably begin in 2023. Initially, the robot is expected to perform boring or dangerous tasks, including in Tesla’s own factories. Later, according to Musk, the robot will be able to be used in homes, from preparing dinner and mowing the lawn to caring for the elderly – without ruling out its role as a close friend or sexual partner.

And other automakers, such as Japan’s Toyota and Honda, have developed prototype humanoid robots capable of doing complex things like shooting a basketball.
